My Story When my son Spencer was born in December 2003, my cousin gave us a copy of the Baby Signs book as a gift. Although the early months with a newborn were consumed with thoughts of milk and diapers, we had read through most of the book during those long nights and were eager to get started. We began signing with Spencer when he was around seven months old, and were rewarded with a few signs (eat, drink, more, all done) by about ten months of age. At his birthday in December, Spencer had a signing vocabulary of about ten words. Immediately afterwards things exploded. In January, he knew and used about 25 words and my husband and I were so amazed and pleased at Spencer's succinct ability to communicate his needs. It was at that point I really became inspired to spread the word and teach others about the concept of signing with hearing babies. I got on board as a Baby Signs® Independent Certified Instructor in early 2005 and have been having so much fun! It is so rewarding to help open this door to other parents and know that they will soon realize the same joy and satisfaction that my husband and I experience with Spencer. |
